This hearty Swiss Steak is slow-cooked to perfection with tender beef, rich gravy, and wholesome vegetables.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs beef round steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup carrots, sliced
  • 1 cup celery, sliced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions

  1. Prepare the ingredients by cutting the beef into pieces and seasoning with salt and pepper.
  2. Dredge the beef in flour, coating well on all sides.
  3. Heat olive oil, then sear the beef until golden brown on both sides.
  4. Sauté onions, garlic, carrots, and celery in the same skillet until onions are translucent.
  5. Add beef broth, diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme, then bring to a simmer.
  6. Return the beef to the pot, cover, and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours until tender.
  7. Check for tenderness and adjust cooking time if necessary.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  9. Serve the Swiss Steak over mashed potatoes or with crusty bread, ladling gravy over the top.

Notes

  • For best results, allow the steak to simmer longer for enhanced tenderness and flavor.
  • Pair with mashed potatoes or bread for a complete meal.
